So Will I: More Than A Song
Chances are, you’ve heard the lyrics. This popular Hillsong favorite beautifully illustrates the love between God and His creation. Every time I hear it a sense of peace comes over me as it brings into focus the true essence of my being. You see, many times we are too quick to complicate life more than we need to. We are so consumed with trying to figure everything out, get the new best thing, or just deal with everyday responsibilities that we forget our ultimate purpose. We were made by a loving God, to love a God, that first loved us. We were created for worship!
Worship doesn’t only mean singing aloud with closed eyes and raised hands. That’s an essential part of it, but as the song implies, it means so much more than that. All of creation worships in the way that it was designed to. The birds sing their songs, the flowers blossom, the lakes reflect the sun, the ocean waves roar, and the stars shine bright in darkness. It would be absurd to hear flowers singing or to see birds blossoming because that is simply not what they were made to do. Likewise, you were made to worship God with the unique life that He has designed for you.
Worship With Work
Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Yes, that’s correct, the work you do is a form of worship. Your job should not only be viewed as a paycheck provider, but as an opportunity to please God. God will test you with your work. He wants to see what you will do with the skills and gifts He’s given you before He blesses you with more (Luke 16:10). Laziness is not an option because it doesn’t operate with excellence. When you work heartily, you are representing an excellent God!
Worship With Interactions
Everyday presents new opportunities to interact with people. Some people are easy to get along with, while other people might not be quite as pleasant. You are guaranteed to encounter both types on a regular basis though, so it’s important to understand that what you say and how you react matters. You might be the only “Jesus” they see in their lifetime, which is why Ephesians 4:29 tells us to “not let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” This is especially true with your family. The way you discipline your kids and/or speak to your spouse will either exemplify Christ, or falsify Him. Let people see the light and joy of Christ shine through you. Allow them to experience His grace and peace. That, my friend, is a true act of worship.
Worship With Time
How you use your time tells a lot about your priorities. So when Jesus is at the center of your life, it will be evident by who you are with and/or what you are doing with the 24 hours given to you each day. Are you spending time with Him by reading His word and praying? Are you serving Him by serving others to some capacity? Of course it’s also important to get some leisure and recreational time in as well. Fellowshipping with other believers is an important form of worship because He desires for us to gather and connect with His people (1 John 1:7).
Worship with Finances
How you spend your money is a form of worship when it puts God first. When you pay tithes, you’re acknowledging that everything you have comes from Him and that you are grateful for what He’s blessed you with. It’s a worshipping act that demonstrates faith in Him as your provider. And, just as with time, how you spend, invest, or save money determines the level of growth and freedom you will experience with it. God knows what you need. And He desires to bless His good stewards. Remember, He is a rewarder of our faith (Hebrews 11:6)!
Ultimately, worshipping God is doing what He has already designed you to do. Yes, we each have unique jobs, responsibilities, and interactions that we encounter. And yes, we have various time and money freedoms that add to our originality. Yet each of these areas are a part of everyone’s life.
We are all given opportunities to worship God in everything we do. So let’s not make it complicated. As with all of creation, it’s an innate ability given to us by our creator.
If the stars were made to worship... so will I.
