Stars and Security

As a young girl, I remember how easily I’d become mesmerized by the vast night sky and get lost in the sea of stars. I could spend hours simply gazing up at them as my mind curiously contemplated what it would be like to fly through the universe and explore the wonders of space. And somehow, every time, I would find myself in awe of the greatness of God—the master artist who had the capacity to paint on such an expansive, complex canvas. Every star occupied its own space. Each star was visible by its endless, twinkling light. It was fascinating.

When speaking about the heavens, moon, and stars, Psalm 148:5-6 says to “Let them praise the name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created. He set them in place for ever and ever; He gave a decree that will never pass away.”

What God was saying here is that He made their existence secure. There is a purpose and a place for each of them, regardless of how numerous they are in the sky. Furthermore, Psalm 147:4 states that God determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

We, His human creation, are very similar to the stars in this way. We too are called by name for His purposes (Isaiah 43:7)! Like the stars, you were created to shine through darkness and not to fear it. As a matter of fact, stars can’t truly shine without darkness. It is what amplifies their very existence. At times, the darkness can seem overpowering, but the Lord himself promises security to those who love Him (Psalm 40:2)—you can rest assured that He’s got you in the palm of His hand!

Consider Psalm 139: 11-12, which says, “If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me, even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.’” When you do what you were created to do, the result will always be in your favor. Why? Because God’s light that shines within you is greater than any darkness that comes against you.

Sometimes we can feel invisible or insignificant, like no one sees or understands us. We might think, “Who am I? There’s so many people on this planet…why would God be interested in me and my whereabouts?” But, like every star, God always knows your exact location. His GPS coordinates are more precise than any form of technology available today. And He knows your every move. He notices when your shine is bright and when it’s been dimmed. Psalm 139:3 says of God, “You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways…where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?”

The truth is, God is all knowing and omnipresent. When you feel invisible or that darkness is closing in all around you, pray for the faith to do what He created you for. Stars are more than just beautiful, twinkling lights that come out at night—they are reminders of God wanting to shine His light in you and through you as the opportunities arise.

MOVE. MEASURE. MARCH.

March On!
